Corby's mix: new-town housing, big modern estates and village edges
Much of Corby was built in the 1950s and 1960s, when the steelworks drew families from across the UK and Scotland in particular. That era left whole neighbourhoods of new-town housing: terraces and semis built to standard designs, often with flat or low-pitched roofs and later additions. In the last twenty years the town has expanded again, with large modern estates such as Priors Hall and Oakley Vale. Around the edges, older villages such as Weldon, Cottingham and Great Oakley keep their stone cottages and individual houses. So within a few miles you can find a post-war home on its third consumer unit, a five-year-old house with modern protection, and a period cottage with very little documented history.
Rewires and upgrades in post-war homes
Post-war Corby houses were wired to the standards of their day, and many have been partly updated since. Age alone does not mean a rewire is needed. Plenty of these homes were rewired decades ago and only need a newer board or a few extra circuits. Others still have original cables, few sockets and no RCD protection. An EICR is usually the best starting point, because it shows the actual condition of the wiring rather than relying on assumptions. If a rewire is the answer, Sean explains what is involved, how the work is sequenced and how it might fit around living in the house.
EV chargers on modern estates
Most homes on estates such as Priors Hall and Oakley Vale have driveways or garages, which helps when planning a home charger. Sean checks the supply, the board, earthing and the cable route, and confirms whether the property already has provision. In older parts of town where parking is shared or on-street, home charging may not be practical, and Sean will say so rather than suggest something unsafe. He holds City & Guilds 2921-34 in EV charging installation.
Rental homes and landlord certificates
Corby has a sizeable rented sector, including former council homes now let privately. In England, private landlords must have the electrical installation inspected and tested at least every five years and give a copy of the report to tenants; GOV.UK sets out the details. Sean can inspect one property or work through several in a sensible order, explaining any codes and quoting separately for remedial work. Good access on the day, with tenants informed in advance, keeps the visit on track.
Industrial and commercial estates
Corby still has a strong industrial base, with large estates of manufacturing, distribution and trade units, plus shops and offices in the town centre. Commercial work might involve inspections, new circuits for equipment, lighting or charge points. Sean starts by understanding how the site operates, what supply is available and when work can happen with the least disruption.
Travel and booking
SR Installations (Electricals) is based in Northampton and covers Northamptonshire, Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, travelling up to 60 miles for the right job, so Corby is well within reach. Call Sean on 07747 562927, Monday to Friday 8am to 6pm or Saturday 8am to 12pm, or send a quote request with your postcode and a description of the work. Photos of the fuse box and any problem areas help a lot.
