Electrician in Bedford

Bedford is an easy trip south-east from our Northampton base. Sean Reynolds helps homeowners, landlords and businesses in the town and the surrounding villages with rewires, fuse box upgrades, inspections and charging points.

Bedford homes: Victorian streets, inter-war semis and new estates

Walk out from the town centre and you pass through several eras of building. Close to the river and the centre there are long streets of Victorian and Edwardian terraces, many now split between owner-occupiers and lets. Further out, the inter-war and post-war suburbs bring bay-fronted semis, short terraces and bungalows. Around the edges, and in villages such as Kempston, Biddenham, Wixams and Bromham, newer estates have grown quickly in recent decades. The wiring in each tends to tell its own story. An older terrace may have been partly updated several times by different people, leaving a mix of cable types, while a recent build usually has modern protection but limited spare capacity for big additions. Sean looks at what is in front of him and gives you an honest view rather than a guess based on the age of the street.

Rewires and fuse box upgrades in older housing

Some of Bedford's older homes still have rewireable fuses, rubber or early PVC cables, or lighting circuits without an earth. None of that automatically means a full rewire, but it does mean the installation deserves a proper look. Often an inspection is the sensible first step: it shows whether a consumer unit upgrade on its own would be safe, or whether circuits need replacing first. Where a full rewire is the right answer, the job is usually planned around floorboards, ceilings and decorating, so it is worth thinking about timing if you are already renovating. Our fuse box upgrade and house rewiring pages explain both jobs in more detail, including why a new board can sometimes reveal faults that were hidden behind old fuses.

EV charging on terraced streets without driveways

A lot of Bedford's terraced streets have no off-street parking, which raises a common question: can you still charge at home? Running a cable across a public pavement to a car parked on the road is generally not acceptable without the right permission, because it creates a trip hazard and the highway is not yours to use. Some councils offer or trial kerbside solutions, so it is worth checking what Bedford Borough Council currently allows before buying a charger. If you have a rear garden with access, a garage or a private parking space nearby, there may be a safe route. Sean can look at your property and tell you plainly whether a home charger is practical.

Landlord and HMO inspections

Bedford has a broad private rented market, including houses in multiple occupation close to the centre and the station. Every private landlord in England must have the electrical installation inspected and tested at least every five years and give tenants a copy of the report; GOV.UK publishes the guidance. HMOs may also carry licensing conditions set by the local council, so landlords should check what applies to their property. Sean carries out EICRs, explains each observation and can quote for any remedial work. Shared kitchens, communal lighting and locked bedrooms all affect access, so let tenants know in advance and make sure keys are available on the day.

Commercial and industrial work

Bedford has industrial estates, retail parks and small business units as well as shops and offices in town. Commercial work might include periodic inspections, new circuits for machinery or equipment, lighting upgrades or workplace charging points. Sean will want to understand how the premises are used, what supply is available and whether work has to be planned around trading. For leased units, check with the landlord or managing agent before alterations.

07747 562927
Do you cover Bedford town centre and villages?

Yes. We cover the town and nearby villages such as Kempston, Biddenham, Bromham and Wixams. Send your postcode if you are unsure.

Can I get an EV charger without a driveway?

Possibly, but not by trailing a cable across a public pavement. If you have a garage, rear access or a private space, Sean can check whether a safe route exists. It is also worth asking the council about kerbside options.

Do you rewire Victorian terraces?

Yes. Sean will usually inspect first to see whether a full rewire, a partial rewire or a board upgrade is the right answer, then plan the work around floors and decorating.

Do you inspect HMOs in Bedford?

Yes. Sean carries out EICRs for shared houses and explains the results. Landlords should also check any licensing conditions the council sets for their HMO.

Do you take on commercial work in Bedford?

Yes. We handle inspections, new circuits, lighting and charging points for shops, offices and units.
